Save Energy
Top energy saving tips
- Close your curtains at dusk to stop heat escaping though the windows.
- Always turn off lights when you leave the room.
- Never leave your emersion heater on all the time.
- Don't leave appliances on standby and remember not to leave appliances on charge when it's unnecessary.
- If you fill up the washing machine, tumble dryer or dishwasher use the half load or economy settings.
- Only ever boil as much water as you need (but remember to cover the elements if you are using and electric kettle).
- Remember to clean the back of your fridge regularly – it helps the fridge work efficiently (also applies to freezers).
- A shower uses only two-fifths of the water needed to fill a bath, and therefore a lot less energy is needed to heat up the water.
- Don’t forget if you are aged over 60 on the 24th September your household is entitled to a £200 winter fuel payment. Call 08459 15 15 15 for more information.
Heating
One of the largest costs in our home is energy and in particular heating. By using our heating controls correctly and wisely we can reduce our heating costs.
- Turn your room thermostat down by 1ºC - it could cut your heating bills by up to 10% and save you around £40 per year.
- Is your water too hot? Your cylinder thermostat could be set to high. It does not need to be set any higher than 60ºC/140ºF.
Make sure your thermostatic radiator valves (TRV’S) are set correctly. TRV’s allow you to set different temperatures in different rooms.
