With winter fast approaching it’s time to swot up on ways to keep the heat in your home and the cold out! It’s essential to your health to keep your home warm in the winter. It’s recommended to keep the temperature between 21-24 c (70 and 75 Fahrenheit). Below are a few tips on keeping warm,

  • It may sound silly but make sure you know how to use your heating controls, so you can control the Temperature.
  • When it starts to get dark, draw your curtains shut to keep the heat in, tucking them behind any radiations
  • Draft-proof your house, it’s as simple as it sounds….cover up drafts around letter boxes, key holes and doors.
If you need extra help with keeping warm during the winter then there are a number of different agencies that can help you.

PCL has recently launched its new Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) Service. The EPC is being introduced to the social housing and private rental sectors in October 2008, after initially being introduced to the private market in stages during 2007. Each RSL will need to have an EPC in place for its properties each time they are re-let. PCL will be offering help and assistance as well as delivery of the EPC for its partners over the coming months. Trials are planned with several partners over the next 3 months.

We have just launched our free loft and cavity wall insulation scheme for the over 70’s.

Changes in legislation now mean that all over people aged 70’s in the UK are entitled to grants for free loft and cavity wall insulation.

A limited number of grants for insulation are available on a strictly first come first served basis;
- for those aged 70 and over
- for those in receipt of benefit payment

The scheme is available to anyone who owns their own home or rents privately.

Those who do not qualify for the full 100% grant could still qualify for some assistance towards the cost of insulating their home. It could cost as little as £179 for cavity wall insulation or £199 for lost insulation for a 3 bedroom semi-detached house.

In addition, a new scheme aimed at social landlords that provides funding for energy saving measures in social housing is currently being developed.
